holy hell, gamers, i finally reached one whole thousand followers! how bonkers is that! when i first made this blog in december 2018, i was just trying to start over in a new fandom. ive been active on tumblr for a looong time (since i was like 11, which is. not great, but we wont get into that). i cant remember quite why i decided to remake, but i never imagined getting a higher following than i did before, but i did! 1000 followers is bonkers, iāve never had a thousand of anything! i seriously cant thank each and every one of you enough, whether you followed me for 911 or for mcyt or for whatever!

My Thoughts on FFVIIR
Itās been a few days since I finished FFVIIR, and I wanted to put my thoughts on the game into words, but I gotta get a few housekeeping things out of the way.
1.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā These are all MY opinions. I understand and respect that others may have different opinions from me, however, that does not make this an open invitation for argument in the comments, bashing, etc. I have no problem blocking anyone who wants to be an asshole. Just be nice, please.
2.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā I grew up playing FFVII and all of its spin-offs. FFVII was my first RPG, and ultimately what got me into playing video games. Nostalgia is a -huge- part of why I enjoyed FFVIIR so much, and therefore I am openly biased towards the game. Iām interested to hear the thoughts of people not familiar with the original, because theyāre seeing the story with a fresh set of eyes.
3.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā With that being said, Iāve already noticed drama surrounding FFVIIR fans who -have- played the original vs. those who havenāt, or those who havenāt played Crisis Core, etc. I am firmly of the belief that this is a great game for new and old fans and wonāt tolerate any condescending attitudes in either direction. Video games are supposed to be fun, so letās just all agree to enjoy the thing TOGETHER, shall we?
Alright, now that those things are out of the way, onto my thoughts. **MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD**
Iām going to be breaking this up into sections, because there is just too much to dissect! Letās start with the characters.
āThe Good Guysā
Cloud: Still my favorite character of all time, even more so after playing the remake. And of course, he is gorgeous. I could stare into his eyes all day. I know there has been a lot of controversy over getting new voice actors for the remake, but I feel like his VA did a great job. They nailed his personality of ābroody asshole with a heart of goldā, and I think the remake had reasonable and believable character development when it came to Cloudās interactions with the other party members. His dynamic with Tifa, Aerith, and Barrett was also spot on. I think it was a good move on Squeenixās part to keep him pretty much the same, because heās such an iconic character for the entire Final Fantasy series, so no complaints on my part!
Jessie: Okay, so, I hated Jessie at first. She was too flirty and all over Cloud for my liking, and I felt this strange disconnect between the āI used to be an actress but now Iām fighting for the planetā part of her backstory. Yes, she was still spunky in the original, but they didnāt draw it out nearly as much (I assume because she was killed off early). I -do- appreciate that the developerās felt the need to give her more depth and show more interactions between her and Cloud and everyone else, but I also thought it detracted from Cloudās relationships with Tifa and Aerith to an extent, especially the whole scene where she was asking him to come back to her place with him (yikes). And, true to Squeenix form, they killed off her character, even while letting Biggs and Wedge live (they both died in the original). So, in that sense, I didnāt really care that much for her, although her final scene with Cloud was very moving and redeemed her in some ways for me. So, yay for more screen time, but cāmon Squeenix, why do you gotta use your female characters this way?!
Biggs & Wedge: I loved the updates to their character models, and like with Jessie, I appreciate they tried to give them more depth and dialogue to make their involvement more significant. It did throw me for a loop when they both ended up living instead of dying when the Sector 7 plate fell. I was delighted to discover they survived (until I found out Jessie died and they didnāt). At times, I felt like their exalted importance detracted from other characters, especially at the end in Shinra HQ where Wedge shows up to warn everyone and Avalanche comes in to try and rescue Cloud & the gang, only to imply that he dies -there- instead. To me, it felt like an unnecessary moment to add in, but hey, there are only so many characters in the remake that people get to see, so why not give the Avalanche crew a more important role? Iām interested to see if this means that theyāll be returning in the next installments as they may be āfatedā to survive.
Barrett: What a glow up! Barrett looked good, he sounded good, his character was solid and true to the original. I have to say my favorite thing to see was how the banter and dialogue shifted between him and Cloud as you progressed through the remake. They went from basically hating on each other to complimenting each other and being buddy-buddy, and it was truly heartwarming. I even enjoyed using Barrett in battle (more on the fighting system later), which was refreshing. It was a good move on Squeenixās part to show his softer side by including more scenes with Marlene, and heās an excellent foil to Cloudās character, which I feel was consistent for both games.
Tifa: My lady, the love of my life, my HERO. Tifa was -amazing- for me. Also, her VA was probably my favorite of the bunch. The updates to her outfit were much needed, yet she still retained her sexy allure, even if it was a little awkward to hear all the male NPCās talking about how hot she was all the time. Other than Cloud, she was my favorite party member to use in battleāwhat a total badass!āand the scenes with her and Cloud made me squeal with delight. I was grateful for the extra attention put into their relationship, and how it was made clear that she was just as important and strong as the male characters.
Aerith: First, the positives. They expanded Aerithās fighting range, which was appreciated, because in the original I only used her as healer. Her personality shone through a bit more, as she was even ore outgoing than I remembered her being (and even cursed a few times!), and I loved all of her interactions with Tifa and Cloud (my favorite trio/love triangle). Her backstory was pretty well communicated regarding the Ancients and her relationship with Shinra. On the flip side of things, I found her party banter annoying as hell and her voice grating at times (it reminded me of a high school girl), and Iām not sure how I feel about her interactions with the Whispers and what that implies for future installments. There was some hinting at the end of the remake that Aerith may not die like she did in the original (at least that was my interpretation), and Iām not sure whether I like that possibility or not, mainly because Aerithās death is one of the most memorable scenes of FFVII, and that would change the entire plot. For better or for worse, whoās to say?
Red XIII: I loved all of the scenes with Red! His voice fit him really well, and they showed a lot of character development with him and the group in a short amount of time. I was sad you couldnāt control him in your party, but Iām hoping that will change in the next installment. Iām excited to see his backstory in Cosmo Canyon when we finally get to that point in the remake.
Chadley: This kid was annoying and weird, and I wasnāt sure exactly what his deal was, but he was definitely shady AF. Not sure why he was entirely necessary if he was simply a way to upgrade your materia, but hey, Iāll take that assess materia from ya buddy if it means new stuff for me to use.Ā
Johnny: Johnny grew on me. Was he also annoying and weird too? Yes. But he reminded me of a Prompto-Gladio lovechild and turned out to be a sweetheart, so I say he can stay, Squeenix.
āThe Bad Guysā
Shinra executives: Not much to say here for me other than great job in bringing this diabolic group to life. Yep, still hate every one of āem. They stayed pretty much true to their original selves, and all of them matched what I remembered of them, right down to the dialogue. I thought it was an interesting choice to see Sephiroth kill President Shinra (in the original you just find him dead at his desk, impaled on Sephirothās sword), but Iām not complaining. That guy was a grade A asshole.
The Turks: Love, love, love how they portrayed each of these guys, and showed how they are also unwilling participants in all of Shinraās shit. They definitely made them more likeable from the get-go and I felt a lot of callbacks to Advent Children. Reno cursing and being sassy was probably one of my favorite things out of the entire game. He had -so- many great lines, even if they werenāt direct translations of the Japanese. Iām hoping they will include more of the Turks in future installments (like Cissnei in Crisis Core) and continue fleshing out their story arcs.
Rosche: Okay, unpopular opinion, but I did not like this guy at all. Iām not sure what the hype is about him all over my social media. Could be the mullet, which is an automatic ānoā for me (Gladio from FFXV being the only exception), but he seemed like an irritating and very pointless addition to the game. His sole purpose appeared to be to prepare you for escaping Shinra and fighting from Cloudās motorcycle towards the end, but I felt like he could have been taken out of the story entirely without missing anything. I didnāt hate as many of the newer characters (like Leslie) as much as I did him, but I guess he and I just didnāt vibe. Iām assuming heāll return later on, so maybe my opinion will change. (I sure hope so.)
Leslie: Okay, at first, I was like, āwho is this knock-off Noctis wannabe?ā but I really enjoyed the backstory and depth they gave this seemingly minor character. I see that Squeenix is trying to provide new things for older fans to take interest in, and in this case, I felt he was a nice touch. (Edit: I was told that Leslie, Kyrie, and some of the other new NPCs were featured in an audio book?! Which I had no idea even existed, so...the more you know!)
Don Corneo: Even slimier and creepier in HD! Honestly, hats off to Squeenix for translating what was possibly the most cringy and controversial part of the original in a ātastefulā way in regard to all of Wall Market. This guy was definitely a worthy villain in the remake.
Rufus: Holy hell. I never ever in my life thought Iād be saying this, but wow, is Rufus hotter than I remember. Thank you, Squeenix for giving me another foxy bad boy to drool over. He was also, for me, the hardest and most frustrating boss battle (even more so than Sephiroth), but it was totally worth dying to watch all the cut scenes with him over again. Canāt wait to see more of him in the next installment.
Hojo: God, I hate this guy. I know youāre -supposed- to, but he is such a creep. Hearing his dialogue in the remake was even worse than reading it in the original. Gotta say, dealing with his four wards in Shinra HQ was my least favorite part of the game by far, but I know he will get his comeuppance later down the road. All the dialogue was just as shocking as I remember, so, yeah. Good job?!
Sephiroth: Alright, anyone else feel like they made Sephiroth EXTRA SEXUAL in this remake?! You too? Oh, good, good, same bro. Now, it could just be me projecting, but anytime he came on the screenā¦panties were dropping yāall. Of course, Iām not one to complain about Sephiroth content. On the contrary, I lap it up like I just walked through the desert and found an oasis, BUT, I will say thisā¦you barely see Sephiroth at all at this point in the original. As a reminder, the remake only covered the first 4-6 hours of the original game, and I get you canāt really do a remake without at least SHOWING Sephiroth for the people who have been waiting to see him in HD, but with that being said, he was VERY involved. I love Sephiroth, heās a great villain, but they are definitely changing things with him, so I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.
My one criticism? His voice was my least favorite out of the main characters. Not saying the VA didnāt do a great job, but it didnāt sound deep enough to be as intimidating. I prefer the VA who voiced him in Advent Children, but Iām sure it will grow on me in time.
Gameplay
Battle system: When the remakeās demo was released, I remember a lot of people were complaining about how ādifficultā the new battle system was, but I absolutely love it. Itās just the perfect balance of turn-based and real-time, with plenty of options for customization. If you want more real time, you can set your short cuts, and if you want more turn-based, you also have that option. My only real complaint was that item use is also tied to the ATB bar, but overtime I figured out when to heal myself in a timely fashion (after dying more than a handful of times). Button mashers wonāt enjoy this battle system because it requires a little more strategy, but I think the point was to create an updated version of the original fighting style that would appeal to both old and new players, and it definitely delivered. Seeing the classic limit breaks used and being able to run around during battle was so much fun for me, and I about died when I saw Cloud strike his OG victory pose in Wall Marketās coliseum. Also, the transition between running through Midgar and entering battle was SO incredibly smooth and seamless that at times you didnāt notice the shift. Phenomenal.
oĀ Ā Boss Battles: As much as I enjoyed the battle system of remake, some of the bosses felt unnecessarily hard and/or tedious (Iām looking at you, Hell House). Making use of the assess materia early on definitely helped me out, but I legit got bored at times, especially that damn giant robot you fight with only Barrett and Aerith when escaping Shinra HQ. This is really just a minor complaint, but there were a couple bosses where I died several times (*cough* Rufus *cough*) before I figured out the secret to defeating them, while others were super easy or just not that interesting. Meh. For context, I played on ānormalā mode, but it truly felt hard in certain scenarios. (That could just have been me trying to get used to the new fighting style.)
oĀ Ā Materia: speaking of materia, I did notice some new materia in the game, which was neat, and although I didnāt care for Chadley (dude, where are your parents?) it was nice to have a way to develop and earn new materia throughout. I found it somewhat strange that summon materia was just a thing you could get so early on instead of having to work for it, but I was excited to use it. Shiva and Ifrit were definitely my favorite summons (which hasnāt changed from the original for me). My one big question: where is the freaking āallā materia?! I know they kinda split āallā up into many different types of materia, and you do have āprayā for healing your entire party, but man, that was so versatile in the original so that was a hard adjustment for me not to have use of it.
oĀ Ā Weapons: I think itās cool that they developed an upgrade system to make use of your weapons long term, giving them their own abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. Made me think of FFX where you used the spheres to upgrade your characters. Also? I loved being able to see materia in my weapons when I switched them out. That was a really neat touch.Ā
Music: And here I thought they couldnāt make the music of the original game any more epic, but they definitely outdid themselves in the remake. I enjoyed hearing all the remixes and ways they wove the classic themes into different parts of the games. I think my favorite was when youāre going through sector 5 with Aerith and have to control the giant robotic hands. The music in that section SLAPPED.Ā The in-game jukebox was also a nice way to honor the old school classics. Hearing Aerithās theme for the first time just about made me cry, and listening to One-Winged Angel fighting Sephiroth? Nothing could beat that moment musically for me.
Side quests: Iām not sure about anyone else, but I really didnāt care for the side quests. They werenāt very fun for the most part, and considering how linear the game is, they felt more like chores that needed to be completed because I had to, and not because I wanted to. The only exception was Wall Market, but all-in-all, most of them didnāt add much to the story, unlike in FFXV where I could go down a rabbit hole of sidequests for hours and hours.
Graphics: This is clearly stating the obvious, as anyone with eyes will tell you, the game is nothing short of gorgeous. I cannot tell you how many screencaps I took of just Cloud. It was definitely a world that I wanted to run around in for hours (and did) and will do so again and again just to look at all the little details. My favorite thing to do is watch comparison videos of the original and remake openings side-by-side. How crazy is it that technology has come this far!
Playtime: My biggest critique of this game is that it was too damn short. Stretching the first 4-6 hours of the original into 40 was definitely impressive, but considering I waited 20+ years for the remake, it was pretty disappointing to finish the game in less than a week. Like most people, Iām wondering just how long they plan on stretching this out, how many installments there will be, and when the second part will be released. Hopefully not another ten years, but it -is- Squeenix weāre talking about...
Storyline
Most people who played will tell you that most of the remake stayed very true to the original, even lifting some of the exact dialogue and scenes. The nostalgia hit me so hard in parts that I was literally in tears. The first time I watched the opening in the demo, I cried. Thatās the power this game has over many people, including myself.
In other ways, the remake improved on parts of the story or re-imagined them. We always knew it wasnāt going to be a copy and paste of the original story, which Iām sincerely grateful for. I would seriously hope that after 20+ years they would have thought of ways to improve or polish FFVII and make it new and exciting for returning fans and people just picking it up.
My pros regarding the updates in the story:
- They fleshed out many background characters and added in new ones. Most of the core group spent more time interacting, and the party banter felt natural and progressed realistically as the game went on.
- New mini-games and side quests expanded on the slums and made the areas larger and more interactive, yet they still kept the nostalgia of iconic locales.
- Plenty of fuel to fan shipping fires with emotionally charged scenes and pretty boys abounding (Cloti and Clerith especially).
- All of Wall Market was brilliantly done. I was wondering how theyād update it for the new generation, and it was seriously the best part of the game for me (and had me laughing the entire time).
-Ā Hinting that Zack is alive and/or Aerith may live is something Iām listing as a pro, only because I would love to see these characters used to their full potential, however, this is also a con for me, and Iāll explain why.
My cons:
Whispers: If you played the original, you probably had the same reaction as I did when the āWhispersā showed up. āWtf are these dementor-looking things?ā At first, I thought they might be something similar to what we saw in Advent Children, and that they were āremnantsā or parts of Sephiroth, or somehow his minions, or even souls from the Lifestream, etc. When I found out they were actually supposed to be āprotectors of fateā or whatever, I rolled my eyes, especially when Barret was ākilledā by Sephiroth and then miraculously brought back to life. It felt very ādeus ex machinaā to me in the sense that āeverything has to go a certain way because we said so.ā While it makes sense, I really wasnāt buying it, but Iām assuming that we will learn more about them in the second installment.Ā
The Ending: The whole final boss battle of the remake was surprising, because it felt almost exactly like the final boss bottle of the original game, right down to the cutscene where Cloud is thrown through space and faces off against Sephiroth one-on-one. Before you defeat the āharbinger of fateā (anyone else get KH heartless vibes?) and fight Sephiroth as the final boss, Aerith goes on her long spiel about āfateā and ādestinyā and āthis will change us,ā and itās laid on so thick that itās almost like they were setting us up for an alternate timeline, which is entirely possible, but thatās all speculation at this point. Regardless, they made it clear that whatever is coming next is going to be -very- different from the original, or possibly is going to be another timeline of the story, especially since Zack was shown alive and well. One criticism I heard from someone who hadnāt played the original game was that they treated Sephiroth and Zack like people you were supposed to know, and I can agree with that. They didnāt spend -any- time explaining their significance, backstory, or why people were so afraid of Sephiroth other than showing you little flashbacks into Cloudās deranged memories, so in that sense, the ending might have fallen flat for those who donāt know exactly what Sephiroth represents or who he is, or why he stole Jenova from Hojoās lab, etc, etc. Plus, throwing in Zack at the end is something that anyone who played the original game or Crisis Core would get, but new fans would also not understand the significance of. Personally, I screamed when I saw Zack because I was so happy , but I can see why that ending would be very unsatisfying and/or confusing for some.
Overall: 9/10
No, it doesnāt get a 10/10 for me, even as someone who absolutely loves Final Fantasy VII, but hey, no game is perfect. Itās honestly hard to live up to the hype this game has created since it was officially announced, and all things considered, Squeenix -did- live up to it. I will still be eagerly awaiting part two, playing the shit out of this game and squeezing the most I can out of it until I get to experience more.
Iād love to hear what other people thought (so long as the discourse is respectful of course). If you read this far, thanks for listening to my ramblings!

Now that Gegege no Kitaro 2018 is over, and I remember it's one of your favorite Gegege no Kitaro iteration, what's your overall and concluding thoughts about it? What are your favorite episodes of all 97 (or each season) episodes? The positive and negative? Characterization of Sawashiro Kitaro and the other Kitaro family (including Mana)? I would love to know your opinion of the sixth remake!
This is going to be a long answer. And full of spoilers, for those of you looking at this who havenāt watched the 2018 version of Kitaro. Here goes!
What are your favorite episodes of all 97?
I watched all 97 episodes 3 times over the course of its run. I started out watching on my own, then eventually my friend wanted to watch with me. But the crappy Crunchyroll subs got in the way of his enjoyment, so I polished them for him, and then we started watching together.
So for each episode, Iāveā¦
1.) Watched for my own enjoyment when the raw came out
2.) Fixed the subs
3.) Watched and enjoyed again with my best friend.
Before my friend and I started watching together, I also did a rewatch of the series up to the middle of the Backbeard arc, so, 3.3 times? And it only made me like each episode more, and notice more tiny fun details about it. Sawashiro actually smiles a lot, u guys
Anyways, here are my stand-out favorites. Titles may be self-translated or shortened, as Iām looking at the Japanese wikipedia entry for the episodes, and my opinions are mostly disorganized gushing:
1: The Day the Youkai Awoke. Kitaro, Eyeball Dad, and Mana are all very cutely introduced, as well as their dynamics with each other. Great action, ends with the apparent death of the hero. (I was new to Kitaro.) Got me to watch the next week, thatās for sure! Also, world full of weird freaky monsters, already suited to my tastes.
3: Tantanboās Youkai Castle. The episode that earned Sawashiro Kitaro his āGorillaā nickname from the fandom. Also Mana asked to be friends and made Kitaro bashful and the whole latter half is so sweet. FRIENDSHIP
6: Sunekosuri. This is the first Kitaro episode that made me cry, like I really wasnāt expecting that kind of emotional impact. Another thing that kept me watching was that, even though Kitaro has its formulas (as does everything), I still didnāt know what to expect.
7: Ghost Train. Ah, my first experience with the Ghost Train story. Y'know this is the only one where the human passenger pair are both already dead? Iāve seen many other renditions of this story, but this oneās the darkest.
11-12: The 808 Tanuki arc. The whole Kitaro Family shows off their skills in a big cool battle, and Mana overcomes an intense struggle to save the day (with some credit to Murder Momen Rollo Cloth). As my friend often says, Mana is too good for this world.
13: Wanyuudo. Got some insight to Kitaro and Ratmanās odd, long-lasting friendship. When I first watched this, I didnāt really understand why they were still friends. But over the next 2 years, I would.
The meta reason? Ratman was Shigeru Mizukiās favorite out of all his characters.
14: Makura-gaeshi. The second episode that made me cry. (not hard for a show to do that, but still) Also shot my already-present respect for Eyeball Dad through the roof.
Iām pretty sure this is the episode that changed GeGeGe no Kitaro from āone of the shows I watch once a weekā to āI must find and learn about the rest of this franchise.ā Iād looked up characters and little facts here and there on wikis, and occasionally browsed the Kitaro tag on Pixiv before this point, but this was the tipping point.
The door to the unseen world was open, and I jumped through.
18: Kawausoās Lie. haha, Manaās a city girl whoās scared of bugs
22: Gyuuki. Body horror, despair, and a really good Catgirl episode.
27-37: The Backbeard arc, or 6th Kitaroās version of the āGreat Youkai Warā story. For a refreshing twist, the designated āWitchā isnāt evil in this retelling. In fact, Agnes quickly became one of my most favorite and relatable characters.
She definitely had a rocky start with the Japanese youkai, and watching her develop friendships with Mana and Kitaro was great to see, and even better on the rewatch. My friend likes Agnes a lot, too. Just assume I cried at the Mana/Agnes friendship stuff, Iām sure it happened on the rewatch, too.
Also Kitaro finally invites Mana into GeGeGe Forest! She fucking earned it!!
38: Kasha. I had already seen Reverse Mochi Murder 3 different times by this point, but itās best whenever freaky ghost-eyeballs are involved.
Also Mana punched Kasha in the face. Well, Kitaroās face.
39: bang. I lost it.
40: This is the darkest version of Sara-kozo! And I like it. His song was best put to use in the 4th Kitaro series, and even had a callback in one of my most favorite episodes of that series. The song, of course, is terribly catchy.
42: The Great Youkai Trial. Having seen the other versions of this story, Iām glad the writers made the 6th series version stand on its own, weaving it into the overarching Nanashi plot.
43: Odoro-Odoro. This isnāt the first Odoro-Odoro retelling where Kitaroās efforts are thankless and reviled, but it is the one that shows it the most intensely.
47-49: Nanashi arc conclusion. Each Kitaro anime has its harsh and intense moments (even the relatively gentle 5th series), but 6th is the one that goes hard most consistently. Not just into darkness, but
50-51: complete and utter sweetness KITTENGIRL dgjklfhjlkHFDGKMBHKjl
54: Dorotabo. Sometimes, there is no ārightā choice that can make everyone happy. Being a mediator can be hard, frustrating, and sometimes impossible. But despite all the stress, frustration, and repeating the same tragic scenarios, Kitaro keeps on trying.
Also, Kitaro totally carried that frog up to the roof of his house for company at the end of the episode.
56: Vampire Elite. The most sympathetic retelling of Johnnyās story. And a great Kitaro/Ratman friendship episode.
57: La Seine. He doesnāt have a top hat this time. A great retelling of Hand, and a Kitaro/Mana friendship episode. Two vampire episodes in a row, and it didnāt feel repetitive at all.
58: Kamaboko. 6th Kitaroās crossdressing episode, with Sawashiro Kitaro at his most vindictive. Fun for all sorts of reasons. :3c
59: Ushiro-gami. Also known as the youkai cactus episode, somewhat of a series staple. This one had great horror vibes, and Mana overcoming her fear and risking her life to help Kitaro save the day. Never gets old! Manaās the best.
62: Kitaro and Ratman fighting like children. Kitaroās shocked face when Ratman steals his pork. Kitaroās admiration for Ratmanās persistence to keep on living, and appreciation for yanking him back to reality during the end of Nanashi.
The Kitaro/Ratman friendship dynamic is eternal.
64: Suiko, the Water Tiger. If you find an old jar in a dirty hole somewhere? Donāt open it, donāt drink it, donāt let anyone force you to drink it. And if the jar starts talking, shove some dirt in it.
That town full of assholes totally deserved what they got, though.
66: The Grim Reaper and the Hidden Village. Well, in this context, āhidden villageā is more like āShangri-La,ā which is what I changed it to in the fixed subs. The only other version of this Iāve seen is the one from the 2nd Kitaro anime. Itās a well-known trauma episode in the fandom.
In the 2nd anime, Kitaro got the trauma. In the 6th one, Mana did, and Kitaro already knew it was coming.
68: Hell Exile. Yet another one where I wasnāt sure if itād end cynical or hopeful. One of the fresher takes on the Hell Exile story, too.
69: Ibukimaru. Nicely advances the Four Treasonous Generals arc, and has some interaction between Rei and Mana. Oh yeah, this arc introduced Rei Isurugi, an intense chuuni with Megaman demon powers. Itās neat to watch how Rei and Sawashiro Kitaro bounce off each other as individual characters.
70: Mysterious Footprints. Calls back to another one of 2nd Kitaroās infamous trauma episodes, incidentally one of my favorites. This was great, but the 2nd anime had more intense face-melting.
72: Iyami. Mana Is Gay. That is all.
73: Yamata-no-Orochi. A great take on Kitaroās Orochi story, now with more monkeyās paw shenanigans!
74-75: Conclusion of the Four Generals arc. Mana convinces Kitaro not to resign himself to shouldering the heaviest burden alone, as he so often does. Agnes and Adel make an appearance(yay!), and they team up with Mana and Catgirl to help save the day. Rei finally chills out, and gets a new mentor.
77: Neko-sennin. Nurarihyon startles the holy hell out of Kitaro, and further establishes how heās going to operate this time around, connecting to his previous actions in episode 76.
Also, cats. Kitty Kitaro. Cats are my second-favorite animal, so I appreciate the many Kitaro stories involving cats.
78: Mouryou. This one gets retold in several of the other Kitaro series, with decent variation. This one has its own 6th Kitaro touch, with that fucked-up photographer, and an ending I was positive would be dark.
80: Onmoraki. Iād also consider this story a Kitaro staple, though Onmoraki was way tougher this time. Must have had something to do with Nobuyuki Hiyama. :B This is always the episode where Kitaro puts on his old painter costume, and proves he canāt think up fake names worth a damn. Gets me every time.
81: Hideri-gami the mangaka. I love comics, I translate comics, GeGeGe no Kitaro originated as a comic. This episodeās just a love letter to the medium. And seeing Kitaro genuinely enjoying Hiderinās Totally Original Comic Do Not Steal was adorable.
83: Houkou. Some kind of disaster usually happens in this story. In the 4th anime version, Kitaro was burned to ashes. This one hit harder. Nobody won. No one was happy. Weāre reminded of Dorotabo, and how Kitaro never āgets overā tragic situations like these, no matter how often they repeat. I think itād be worse if he was desensitized, and gave up trying to make anything better.
84: Mr. Chin. The Japanese dialogue is full of puns involving the word chin and yeah I lost it. Sunday morning changes with the times, and they still get this guy in.
I died at āthree rainbowsā ghjghjk
89: Te-no-meās Curse. Te-no-me is a youkai who either shows up in the youkai trial story, or has an episode for himself. Also, we finally get to see that Kitaro can just pop his hands on and off. Well, maybe not as casually as in the comicsā¦
90: Sazae-oni. Normally youāre not āsupposedā to do āit was all a dreamā endings, but this is the first time theyāve done that with Sazae-oni, and the dream reveal means we just saw inside Sawashiro Kitaroās mind. The fancy sushi restaurant exterior, the plain sweets shop, the body pillow how does he know about those?! Does he know why they look like that?!!
Kitaro seemed disappointed that he didnāt get to sing on stage. And Rei was in his dream-audience! An adorable episode.
93: The Phantom Train. Catgirl got Homuhomuād. But KitaNeko is finally canon. This whole episode left the fandom reeling, as usual for 6th Kitaro. Best retelling of the Phantom Train story yet.
94: Hot Springs Trip. Mana carried Kitaro over 90 episodes ago, and Kitaro doing the same for Mana repays that favor, in a way.
Kitaro also admits he has Terminal Kitaro Face.
95-97: The end. I did not think they would poof Kitaro. Thatās the deadest Iāve ever seen him, in any version. And the most broken, worse than a giant hate-baby crushing his dad. Kitaro giving Ratman his chashu pork made my heart explode, Manaās sacrifice made the heart-pieces explode, and Mana reuniting with Kitaro 10 years later made my heart whole again.
Nurarihyon offing himself made sense, especially with this being his most dignified characterization in any version. Glad they let Shu-no-bon live, even if he was an actual hardass this time. Shu-no-bonās usually a teddy bear in comparison to dual-wielding gatling guns
Iām sure the prime minister didnāt keep her position for much longer.
Episode 97ās subs left out most of Manaās text to Catgirl at the end, so here it is:
āCat-Sis! Hereās the pic Nebutori took for us on our recent trip! Also, I found a sweets shop near my workplace. Letās ask Kitaro to go there with us!ā
A very sweet ending, indeed.
The positive and negative?
I wish weād gotten to see more of Agnes and Rei outside of their own arcs, and the conclusions of other arcs, though they clearly had their own lives to live and paths to take.
We didnāt get Akamata or Shisa or a bunch of other youkai I was hoping to see in the episodes. We didnāt get stories for Jami or Kamanari, both of who showed up as bit characters at the very end. But I can accept this, too, as writers and staff working within limits, and telling the story they wanted to tell as best as they could.
Iām glad they focused more on new stuff than old, though. Maybe they didnāt want to risk a repeat of 5th Kitaroās non-ending, but they were ready to end the 6th anime with the Nanashi arc. Even with a 2nd year, though, the writers didnāt lose their focused storytelling, and ended the series in a way that left my heart full.
Characterization of Sawashiro Kitaro and the other Kitaro family (including Mana)?
Sawashiro Kitaro continues to be that weird youkai kid, that boy who lives in the woods. Heās chill and has a bunch of comic book youkai powers, a unique sort of superhero, while also not being a cop, thank goodness. Every Kitaro is a bit of a pessimist (except 3rd animeās Toda Kitaro, I guess), but Sawashiro is especially so. This made his gradual development Ā even more fun to watch. The fact that he never could give up on that dream, not completely, made me appreciate that development even more.
Sawashiro cried the least out of all the Kitarosātwice, and it was only onscreen once. He kept everything in so much, itās no wonder he imploded and went to Ultra Hell when the prime minister pot-shot him.
And, Sawashiro Kitaro is so pure and cares so much it hurts.
Eyeball Dad. Since Isamu Tanonaka passed away in 2010, the legendary Masako Nozawa (the original voice of Kitaro) took on voicing the role. Like Kitaro, Eye Dadās characterization changes a bit with each anime, though not as much. Nozawaās performance made Eye Dad feel more laid-back this time, I think, and more patient. In older series, he had more āShowa dadā tendencies. And we got to see him outside of eyeball or mummy form! 6th series spoiled us!
Ratman. Heās usually the same between every adaptation, save for the voice. Sometimes heās nicer, sometimes heās more of a bastard. But heās always Kitaroās friend. He may nasty, greedy, and cynical, but heās usually right about how the world works, and his priorities are hard to disagree with entirely. He knows how to survive, even when treated like dirt for centuries. Ratmanās got a particular brand of wisdom, if you look past the ringworm.
Catgirl. In other versions, she looks like sheās in elementary or middle school, and 6th anime is the most mature sheās ever looked. This is also Catgirl at her most tsundere, but with zero āmean girlā tendencies. All it takes is Mana shooting pure admiration at Catgirl for them to become friends, and thatās cute. I always like Catgirl, and the 6th anime is no exception.
The Kitaro Family. Sandyās mostly unchanged, except now she doesnāt own the Youkai Apartments, and can use modern technology to make a shitload of money. Old Crybaby is 100% the same, down to his old person banter with Sandy.
Rollo Clothās minor interest in finding a girlfriend got turned up to 11. Heād get a lecture from every previous Rollo.
Wally Wall has less vocabulary, no wife and kids, and they thankfully didnāt show his mouth this time. Still a good dude.
Mana Inuyama. The 3rd anime had Yumeko, but even if she wasnāt damseled as often as youād expect from a typical 80s cartoon, it still happened a lot. In the 6th anime, Mana clearly has more agency from the get-go, and refuses to leave herself out of Kitaroās business. Sheās serious about being his friend, and never stops being serious about it, even when things worse than she could ever imagine happened.
All she has are good memories with Kitaro.
Like my friend said, sheās too good for this world.
Whatās your overall and concluding thoughts about the 6th Kitaro anime?
What an emotional roller coaster. The writers pulled no punches with this, and very much managed to make ātheir own Kitaroā while still firmly being āKitaro.ā With the dark and cynical twists it sometimes took, I often didnāt know if thereās be a happy ending to an episode, or a bitter one. Itās a Sunday morning cartoon at its core, but very good at making the audience forget that.
6th Kitaro was my introduction to Kitaro as a whole, and I was hopelessly obsessed by episode 14. Well, because of episode 14, probably. I downloaded all the other Kitaro anime series, got into the comics (official ones by Mizuki, official ones not by Mizuki, and a shit-ton of doujin), and now my brain is just ākitarokitarokitaroā all the time.
I donāt think itās going to stop anytime soon.

[LETāS TALK RE2MAKE] Ada and Leon
There is so much I want to talk about regarding this game, that Iāve decided to just divide it in different posts because, wow, there is A LOT to unpack here. Itās no surprise that I started playing Leonās scenario, mainly because I wanted to see Ada in this new rendition (and also Leon and Ada/Leon, of course!). A heads-up: this is probably going to be very convoluted and not-at-all-organized, but I need to get it out and talk about these two.
Iāll admit my main fear was that Capcom couldāve butchered Adaās characterization, but in the end I had nothing to worry about because we could argue this Ada is even better than in any previous appearances. Mainly because RE2make has probably the best writing/acting in the series (itās still campy at times and thatās good as well! but you know what I mean). This also applies to her relationship with Leon, which also has been improved and now feels more grounded.
First things first, I love the original RE2 to pieces. It was my favourite game in the series, it was the first I played, Leon and Ada are literally the first ship that I ever shipped without knowing what that was. But when you look at it now, even if the writing is good Ā in certain scenes, itās⦠well, itās not RE forte. I mean, Ada goes from running away from Leon to sticking with him and then saying she cared about him all of a sudden. Itās not that you canāt believe it, but because the game is too short, she gets very intense very quickly. Again, we have to suspend our disbelief here a bit because this game was made back in 1998, and narrative in games was limited. For its time, it was kinda goodābut some of those scenes would have looked a bit out of place under the tone RE2make has set. Like the āIām just a woman who fell in love with youā. I mean, I love it in its original context, but it was cheesy af at its time and I donāt think they could have pulled it off here in a believable way.
(I also think Capcom wants to keep the romance tone very subtle, as they have always said they donāt āincludeā them in their RE games <s>except they kinda do but anyway</s> and that love confession was by far the most blatant romantic scene in a RE game).
But I digress, since this is about what RE2make does well in regards to Leon and Ada, and Iād say pretty much everything.
The first thing I noticed I quite liked about this Ada was the contrast between her demeanor and what she was doing: she acted cold and distant, but still kept saving Leonās ass (and she does save him here a lot, more than in the original). This really resonates with their later interactions in other games, even though here she is colder than usual because, well, this is their first meeting so they still donāt have that history and shared background.
[And they keep pointing guns at each other (another great detail, since this is pretty much their dynamic when they meet).]
Now, in the original we know Ada tried to leave Leon behind multiple timesā she had a job to do, and having a rookie cop with her wouldnāt help. But she just kept running away without saying anything and since we donāt know her true intentions until the end, it may come across as a bit strange, given her supposed circumstances. In RE2make this is more nuanced, I think. You can see sheās trying to push him off constantly, telling him to leave as soon as he can and escape the city. Some people always bring up that Ada manipulates Leon into doing things so she can accomplish her missionā and that is true to an extent (letās remember, again, that she also keeps saving him just as much before even accepting his help). But you can also see that wasnāt her first intention, she just wanted to get rid of him and continue her mission. However, Leon is very adamant about not leaving her behind and helping her, because he wants do something for the city and bring those responsible down (I love that he repeats it like two o three times, the āyouāre stuck with meā line basically).
Even in her attempts at getting rid of him, thereās a difference between their first interactions and the ones they share later, from the sewers on. When he finds her in the dumpster wounded, she stills tells him something like āget out of hereā, even if she knows she needs his help now to survive.
When finishing Adaās segment, you can even see sheās scared at the end after the fall (and, indeed, whereās Leon when she needs him xD). But what Leon says here is one of my favourite things:
Now this is not only about uncovering Umbrellaās plot and bringin them to justice for him: they are a team and they protect each other to survive the hell they have been thrown into (which is very reminiscent of their interactions in the original game aka āWeāre a team. I canāt just leave you behindā, even Leon points at this with his āYāknow we make a good teamā, which only makes it all sadder because yes, they do, but now the truth has come out and they are āenemiesā).
So, yeah, what was Ada supposed to say here? She goes along with it, and yes, she tricks him into retrieving the G virus for her, but thatās to be expected because sheās just not going to drop her whole mission and leave everything sheās ever known āfor a pair of pretty eyesā, as Luke Skywalker would say, when we can see sheās very reserved and hides her true feelings/intentions constantly.
Yet she doesnāt want to hurt him (as she admits during their confrontation and this is genuine, no lies here), so thatās the best scenario in play: Leon gets the G virus, he gives it to her under the pretense of taking it back to the FBI, they escape, go their separate ways, she succeeds in her mission. End of story. Thankfully, Leon is not such a naĆÆve ass in this game. Seriously, I replayed the original RE2 just before the remakeās launch and Leon is incredibly gullible to the point of no reasonā though itās endearing in its own way too. But I definitely appreciate more that this Leon still has a hopeful, positive vibe and he really wants to trust Ada, without coming off as an utter fool.
Then the confrontation comes (in a walkway with no railing, guys, havenāt you seen Star Wars??? THAT DOESNāT BODE WELL, NEVER) and itās beautifully made. They could have gone the Leon B route with Ada dying in his arms, but the Leon A version was incredibly poignantā and it remains the same here, even more so because the acting was top notch for me here. (Itās true Ada ādiedā in Leon B to save him and thatās powerful as well, but⦠she has saved him so many times in the remake, it wouldnāt have felt that āspecialā I guess?). Even though Ada has been actively more deceitful in the remake (she takes advantage of the FBI lie much more than she did with the āworried girlfriendā thing), in the end she is not able to shoot Leonā and he knows she wonāt.Ā
The moment he says ābut I donāt think you canā and lowers his weapon is SO GREAT and is a perfect summary of their whole dynamic: they are usually on opposing sides, yet he still trusts she will never harm him; because she canāt. They always walk a very thin line between friend and foe. We as the audience know Ada wonāt shoot him, but itās a such leap of faith for Leon here, at this momentā especially because now he is certain of what Ada is and what she is doing with the G virus. Rationally, thereād no reason for her not to shoot him and get the virusā but despite Adaās lie, the connection they have developed is real. And Leon knows this, trusts his instincts and it pays off. Itās so much more fulfilling than the original scenes or even later ones.
Then we have Adaās ādeathā and itās heart-breaking. That āShut up Iāve got youā from Leon KILLS me every time, and Adaās āitās not worth itā says so much about her, as I understand the implication is that she thinks saving her is not worth it.Ā
Again, this is something that was also present in the original, so I think theyāve managed to blend all versions of Ada quite well (she can be standoffish, independent and sassy, but also show warmth, sadness and compassion). Not only that, I found it quite endearing that she also comes off as very proud and hates feeling weak, rejecting Leonās gestures of kindness when he finds her wounded in the sewers. Thereās the ādonāt push it, rookieā and she claims she would feel even worse if Leon carried her. I donāt think this was a trait we had witnessed before in Ada, even though you could assume she doesnāt like being thought of as weak. But it was really nice to see that on screen and itās just another detail that helps to make her feel more human.
What about the kiss? Iāve seen some people having mixed feelings about it, but I actually liked what they didā again, because this time it all feels more grounded and less āmelodramaticā (which isnāt bad per se, but the tone is different, as Iāve mentioned). We werenāt getting a love confession out of nowhere because it didnāt fit the character, so⦠how can we get a kiss in this situation? Well, now itās part of Adaās manipulation in a wayā but that doesnāt invalidate that sheās starting to care about him in some way and viceverse.
But they are still walking on thin ice: Leon wants to trust her, but he doesnāt know if he should, and she knows sheās lying to him. So she just shuts him up when he starts blabbering about keeping her safe. I donāt mind that itās part of the manipulation because, once more, this is their first meeting and I also think part of her was also being genuine about it, like she thinks heās very sweet for worrying so much about her. This is my interpretation, of course, but I think it fits the scene when she says ādonāt worry about meā and claiming sheād like to see him again, that she has plenty to live for. This is of course all up to debate, because itās made ambiguous on purpose, to make us feel as confused as Leon is. But, in the end, we know what happens in later games (even in this one, when she is unable to shoot him), and whether you like Ada or not, we canāt argue that she cares about him enough to put him before any mission.
Leonās line in the train is also very telling and so much better than the original āGoodbye, Adaā or āIāll always remember youā, in my opinion. He says āI canāt believe I actually miss herā and that rings so true, because, despite the deception, the connection they had was true, they worked well together, they teased each other, they bantered. They made a good team, and Leon made it out alive thanks to her as well. It reflects much better that duality they have, whether they can trust each other or not (as he says in RE6: itās complicated).
Just to end this, because Iāve been blabbering long enough, the other thing Iām forever grateful this remake has given us is Leon and Ada bantering and even their own sort of recurring catch phrase, with the whole ākeeping scoresā that comes full circle: first in a negative way, then it shows up again in a moment of tenderness between the two.
Itās also such a nice way to tie all their history together, because thatās what they always do: they might be on opposing sides, but they always end up saving each other.

Miuās Games of the Decade
Hello all! Wishing you a Happy New Year wherever you are in the world! Itās already January 1st where I am, but Iām sure people are still counting down in other parts of the world. But anywho! I wanted to end the year with a celebration of some of my favorite games released this decade. The 2010ās have been an incredible year for video games, I think. With strides made in graphics, scale, and storytelling, I think this has been easily one of the most innovative eras on all fronts. I hope you enjoy this list of a few of my favorites, and hopefully some of your favorites are here as well! If not, make a list of your own and share it with me! Iād love to see some of your opinions.
But without further ado, on to the countdownā¦
2010 ā FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS
This game, for me, set the standard for what every RPG game should be. From its worldbuilding, to character interactions and on-the-nose commentary, to the way it expands the Fallout universe both mechanically and through storytelling. Of all the Fallout games, this is the one that left the biggest impact on me, and itās the one I still reflect on to this day.
Honorable Mentions ā Bayonetta, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2
2011 ā DRAGON AGE II
So I looooove Dragon Age. Itās, in my opinion, one of the best RPG franchises ever made, and this game in particular is easily my favorite in the series. The writing is at its best, and every character is so loveable that I found myself playing it multiple times just so I could romance everybody. Despite some structural issues in the overall story, I still consider it to be one of the most memorable in the franchise, and I donāt regret a single hour put into this campaign.
Honorable Mentions ā Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Dark Souls, Portal 2, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
2012 ā DISHONORED
As RPG-heavy as this list is, I do wanna give some love to immersive sims. Another favorite genre of mine, and Dishonored is by and large one of the best. I found myself entangled in a number of sticky situations that I had to sleuth and stealth my way out of one too many times. Yet they somehow managed to make that the best part of the game. Player freedom and creativity are practically the foundation of this game, and itās something that made this game not only an enjoyable and unique experience the first time around, but its replay value is through the roof. I do think that later installments in the series, as well as other immersive sim games like Prey, definitely improved upon this one in a lot of areas. But regardless, I still really enjoyed Dishonored, and Iām holding out hope for the future of the series.
Honorable Mentions ā Sleeping Dogs, Mass Effect 3, Borderlands 2, The Walking Dead
2013 ā THE LAST OF US
Iām sure youāre all surprised, but yes. The Last of Us is my GOTY for 2013, and possibly my favorite game of all time. Before playing this, Iāve never had a game put me in such a state of emotional duress for an extended period of time. Not even MGS3ās ending did what this game did to me. And even as Iām typing this, I realize that the technical aspects of this gameāthe graphics, mechanics, level design, etc.āarenāt what makes it stand out in my opinion. My favorite part of this game has to be the journey. The connection between Ellie and Joel (two characters so brilliantly portrayed by Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker). My love for these characters and my desire to see them succeed despite all of the hardships and challenging decisions they were faced with. Thatās why I love this game. It is, for me, the most incredible storytelling experience Iāve ever had.
Honorable Mentions ā Grand Theft Auto V, Tomb Raider, The Wolf Among Us, Injustice: Gods Among Us
2014 ā BAYONETTA 2
The Queen has made it onto this list, and I have nothing but praise for the greatest hack nā slash game ever made. Character design? Stellar. Combat system? Robust, intricate, and absolutely flaw-fucking-free. Improves upon its predecessor in every way imaginable and still remains as stylish and fun as ever? 100%.
If you havenāt played this game yet, please stop reading this and go play this game. It is⦠phenomenal.
Honorable Mentions ā Dragon Age: Inquisition, Dark Souls II, Alien: Isolation, Tales from the Borderlands
2015 ā THE WITCHER 3: WILD HUNT
What can I say about this game that hasnāt already been said, like, 9 million timesā¦?
Itās legendary. Simply put. A flawless and unforgettable RPG experience that simply cannot be replicated. Also, I would die for Yennefer. And Ciri of Cintra is the love of my life.
Honorable Mentions ā Bloodborne, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Life is Strange, Mortal Kombat X
2016 ā HYPER LIGHT DRIFTER
The only indie game on this list, but its spot is well deserved. What has always set video games apart from other storytelling mediums is interactivity. Despite this, I feel like most games still rely on heavy dialogue and cinematic cutscenes in order to spin its narrative. Which is why Iām so appreciative of games like this, where art and exploration are key to understanding the world and the happenings around you. Hyper Light Drifter is a gorgeous game, with challenging combat and beautiful, stylish music and design that will have you feeling both nostalgic and mesmerized. Even in its quieter moments the game remains so rich and thoughtful, and even now itās hard to decipher my feelings afterwards. A mixture of melancholy, delight, and solace. Itās a journey I thoroughly enjoyed taking.
Honorable Mentions ā DOOM, Uncharted 4: A Thiefās End, Titanfall 2, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
2017 ā HORIZON: ZERO DAWN
This year was a solid year for games, which made this decision insanely difficult⦠but after a lot of deliberating, I decided to go with my gut. Aloy stole my heart the moment she came on the screen. Sheās an incredible leading lady whoās strong, determined, complicated, and layered in ways that both intrigued me and that I could relate to. But beyond just my crush on the gameās protagonist, the scope of this game is just⦠fantastic. The way they mixed post-apocalyptic tribalism with futuristic technology, the physics of every monster you encounter being so dynamic that every battle feels viscerally intense, even just the combat mechanics and how much effort was put into designing Aloyās bow and her diversity of combat options, Iām just so!!!! In LOVE with this game!!!!!!!
Honorable Mentions āTekken 7, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Butterfly Soup
2018 ā GOD OF WAR
Yet another game that Iāve showered in so much praise that I donāt think thereās anything left for me to say about it anymore. This game is flawless for a number of reasons. Its meticulously crafted combat system, amazing graphics, beautiful character and game design, gorgeous score, and seamless transitions from action to story that make it feel like a film taken in one single camera shot are all key selling points. But what sold me on this game, and makes it my top pick for this year, was its compelling narrative. The story is one thatās very personal to me. I felt for them and their loss at the very start of the game. I resonated with Atreus and his struggles to connect with his father. And I understood Kratosā inner battle with coming to terms with who he is and the things heās done, and trying to be the father his son deserves. I related to these things, as they resembled all to closely the relationship I had with my own mom. God of War moved me in more ways than one, and Iām very thankful that this game exists. I felt like it was my own story being told on that screen as well.
Also⦠the boss fights are just so fucking fun.
Honorable Mentions ā Spider-Man (PS4), Red Dead Redemption 2, Gris, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
2019 ā RESIDENT EVIL 2: REMAKE
This may be a more controversial pick considering the amount of quality games that came out this year, and I know most of my viewers were probably expecting Control or The Outer Worlds to be here considering how much I hyped those games up. But in my defense, Resident Evil 2 was already one of my all-time favorite games, and this remake nothing short of a masterpiece. To me, itās what every horror game should be. The atmosphere is dark yet engrossing. Every aspect of design, from sounds to levels to enemies, make this one of the scariest horror games Iāve ever played, all without relying on jumpscares, or grotesque imagery (although thereās plenty of that as well, itās not what makes the experience so horrifying imo). Itās one of the most beautifully crafted survival horrors, while manages to improve upon the original while still remaining faithful to it. I consider it a masterclass in how to approach any remake. Capcom truly earned back my trust with this one.
Honorable Mentions ā Control, Katana ZERO, The Outer Worlds, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
And so concludes the list! I hope you enjoyed reading, despite how lengthy it got. I wanted to get out as much praise as I could because every game listed here deserves it. Iām in love with every single one, including so many more that werenāt mentioned. It was truly an amazing decade for gamers and game developers alike, and Iām nothing but optimistic for the future.
See you all next year.
